Kights of the Raj. The Pioneers of Curry Culture
In just a few short decades the popularity of cuisine from the Indian sub-continent has risen phenomenally amongst Britons. Today there are over 30,000 Indian Restaurants in the UK, and the classic Curry and Rice; once a rare, exotic delicacy, is now Britain’s de facto national dish. Few however, are aware that Curry Culture in the UK was pioneered by Bangladeshis, who first began to settle here in the 19th Century. The toil and dedication of these ‘Knights of The Raj’ have transformed British cuisine, culture and society.
Soul City Arts presented Knights of the Raj: a ground-breaking Heritage Lottery Funded (HLF) project documenting the heritage and history of Bangladeshi-owned ‘Indian’ restaurants in Birmingham and collecting, preserving and sharing the previously unknown stories of the people who owned and worked in them.
